Figma Branching Best Practices

Happy Figma Friday. Designers often don’t use file branching as part of their version control process. Here are some good branching best practices in Figma.

Figma Branching Best Practices

Jason Occhipinti has an excellent post about Figma file branching best practices for design teams. As a former front-end developer, I love file branching, and Figma makes this possible in their design tool. The following quotes stood out to me.

Figma branching can be a powerful tool for your design team, but without communication or organization, you might encounter more problems than you solve. Like their counterpart in code, branches allow design teams to iterate and work in instances of the main file.

Historically, designers have not been so lucky. With no major tools at their disposal, they have often been stuck with ever-lengthening and confusing file names on duplicating files or (if they’re lucky), file snapshots or version histories.

Figma branches can seem straightforward, but merge issues can occur quite easily. If you’re not organized with a process in place, you might find yourself doing even more work to detangle a mess of branches.
